I've got a variety of things in the works, as always. My work for A&E develops slowly, but with a release date in 2012, I don't expect a fast burn there. There has been some setbacks on my digital initiative, but the boss tells me it is still planned for a debut this year.

OKAY AND SUDDENLY IT'S NOVEMBER

So, I haven't updated in a while, and this isn't the monster update I wanted to give. But things move along on multiple tracks. The issue is that I cannot speak openly about all of them.

However, while I cannot discuss the contents of said book, I can now say that I will be writing and producing a graphic novel for the A&E Television network, with the option of an expansion into a graphic novel series.

Within mainstream comics, I continue to work on what I think will be the biggest book I've done. I'm not saying much on it right now, but a preview is below. Art on the book is by Polly Guo, with lettering and design by Thomas Mauer and Tim Daniel, respectively.

And on projects that are a bit farther out? Here's a preview of something I'm working on with Jon Cairns.

Also, look in December for an announcement about something else I'll be working on in January and afterward that will hopefully be pretty big. But again, I must wait until I can say more.

Until then, follow the Addams Family credo!

Oh yes, I have not updated in a bit. There will hopefully be news soon, but I am waiting for the hammer to fall before I say anything.

However, I will note that my entire stock for Comic-Con International was either stolen or destroyed by the US Postal Service at its Pittsburgh Distribution Center. Not only did it arrive late, but it arrived not at all, with a shell casing, knife, and other items in a random box to take its place.

If you are mailing something important, do not trust the US Postal Service.

Octobriana issue 2 is completely drawn and at the letterer! The work keeps getting better, and I keep getting more excited about putting it into people's hands.

On that note, Octobriana also has some things happening behind the scenes. The miniseries is moving to a new home, and perhaps a new format. More on that will be coming up as soon as everything is finalized. I hope to have concrete news as soon as possible.

God's Body continues to move along as I reach the halfway point on the script, working on that and alternating with Adventures in Bisexuality, which is still loitering at the 1/3 point due to the onslaught of the holidays.

The Purple Zombie continues his own rebirth, as we continue with Tony Gregori and Christian Oliviarra on art and letters, but add the unique colors of Evan Jones to the book. Evan gives the pages a great amount of life and tangible beauty, and I'm excited to see his work on the pages as the Purple Zombie tries to move from webcomic to hardcopy.

More news to come as work continues, and a Happy New Year approaches-

Okay, I have not given a real update that wasn't a picture in quite some time. So here we go.

First off, Outlaw Territory is out and knocking people's socks off. It was reviewed on Aint It Cool News, which I am really excited for. My stories both are well reviewed, one compared to David Mamet even! Check it out here . Everyone should buy this book, it is great, and you can grab it at Amazon.

Next up is progress on Octobriana. Issue one is complete and at the printers! Work continues on issue two, and each page from Chaz Truog is nicer than the last. Check out a quick catchphrase ad, as well as a panel showing the strange things afoot in 1968 Russia below:

Also, The Purple Zombie is going to take a shot at breaking into Zuda. And so, the old website is out, and color is in! Mike Spicer is dropping in colors, and Tony Gregori and Christian Oliviarra remain on art and letters.

Work continues as well on a long term graphic novel project, to be built online with artist Juha Veltti .

What if we knew God existed, and what if we knew he was not good like we were told?

What if he only had one good part, and he tore it out and threw it through time and space?

Paradise Lost Book 2

Tony Gregori is hard at work on the pencils for Book 2 of Paradise Lost with Community Comics, and I just got the pencils from one of the interior pages in. This is the best work of Tony's career, and Book 2 is coming out so well I had to put up one of the pages. Paradise Lost Book 1 pencils complete

As of the turn of the New Year, the pencils for the revamped Paradise Lost Book 1 with Community Comics are finished. They will soon move to the inker and colorist, and the art for Book 2 has already begun. As such, I thought it appropriate to post some preview panels from the art, which is by far the best take on the book that there as been through the many iterations over the years. Check them out below as we push on through the production schedule.

The pencils are by series artist Tony Gregori.

Octobriana continues its pitch process, as the work is refined to meet the needs of different publishers. Proposal packages will be ready for the New York City Comicon in February.

Also, myself and "Dear Dracula" artist Vinny Navarrete have a three page story in the upcoming anthology "Side B" from Poseur Ink. Check out more about it at the address below.

After a bit, there is some big news for House Spirit Press's adaptation of Paradise Lost, which will now be restarting and continuing with Community Comics. The series has already begun production, and solicitations are due in the spring. Plans are for a six issue mini series with a follow up covering the Fall of Man if all goes according to the plan. The new artist for the entire series is Tony Gregori. Some of his design work can be seen right below here. Jeff Spokes will be back for the covers for the series, and it will be moving from monochrome red to full color as well. All in all we're very excited about this, and there'll be more updates as soon as possible-

Also, as Outlaw Territory vol.1 approaches, Tyler Niccum and myself have begun work on a second story focusing on the early West just after the revolutionary war. A promo for it is right below...more on where it will be appearing in the future-

Just a few quick notes from Comic-Con International-

Sales are good, and people have mentioned they've been noticing the books in some major comic stores as well, so it's good to see the books getting around.

Paradise Lost is attracting attention, and many people are asking where issue two is, and when it will be out. The creative team is in place for issue two, but since the first issue was funded by a college, we are now seeking sponsors for the second issue. Obviously credit would be given, and we're willing to talk about details. Any interested parties should email, and hopefully we can make the second issue happen.

Anyone who watches the G4 gaming channel should be on the lookout for the show "Electric Playground." I will be appearing on it, talking about Points of Connection and comic books in general, as I was interviewed on Thursday.

As I wait on the last of the art for Points of Connection, I have begun writing my script for my next project, which will centre around Octobriana, a Russia pinup character. There is a chance that Paradise Lost's second issue will find funding, and if it does, I have an artist on board: Walter Rodriguez, late of Points of Connection. I have posted below some samples of his work with the characters. Other than that, I hope to update soon and say that Points of Connection is done-

A long delay, some updates at last!

First of all, we have added the domain name www.thesteveorlando.com to this website. Thus, from now on, going to thesteveorlando.blogspot.com will redirect to www.thesteveorlando.com. Be sure to update bookmarks.

Folkloric has been approved from the digital proof, and thus I should be receiving my print run soon. I will be looking for distribution for it this summer. All in all, the book is done.

Points of Connection is close to completion. The layout and design pages have yet to be done, and we are waiting on two more stories. However, the finish line approaches. I'll be shopping this around at San Diego, although a preview was floating around NYC Comic-Con as well. I'll hopefully have an art preview when I'm not swamped with other work.

Also, I've decided to illustrate a one panel a day comic about Russia, both as an exercise to keep me drawing and to slowly amass a collection of the shorts. The story will be ongoing, and will be written and illustrated by me. I'm working off an odd shaped paper, which I enjoy, and which forces a widescreen format as it's about 2.5 x 7. If I publish as a mini comic, I'd like to have it this shape actually. Eventually I might break into panels within the format, but I like the one panel per day mode at the moment, since it's more like a comic strip, which I've never done.

Anyway, hopefully more updates to come as I get back on top of work.

The other piece of big news? I will have a short story appearing in Image Comics' Outlaw Territory with artist Tyler Niccum. For more info check out www.myspace.com/outlawterritory.

Folkloric is in!

I am just dropping in to say that after a long production period, Folkloric is in for publication! The book will be available online at House Spirit Press's Indyplanet page, as well as being on sale at San Diego Comic Con International in the small press area. The book was created and illustrated by me, with letters by Matty Ryan.

Points of Connection has a major art deadline coming up, and production on that will hopefully wrap by the end of April, or the beginning of May. Either way, two long term projects are finally coming up on completion.

Turmoil to Peace gets a new name and a new logo

After some consultation with my confidants and advisers, the formerly tentatively titled graphic novel Turmoil to Peace has gained its final title: Folkoric. This title works a lot more with my previous naming themes in my books, and I am pleased with it. Inking is almost finished with the book and more than half the pages are off to the letterer. More to come soon-

Tyler Niccum, who is illustrating both "Natural Potential" and "One Kiss" for the anthology "Points of Connection," will also be including his story "Flight of Dreams" in the anthology. The story is a gripping piece, and I have provided some quick art previews below.

Also, Turmoil to Peace has only twenty (20!) pages left to be illustrated, and will then move on to the lettering phase. Letterer Matty Ryan has joined the project for a lettering assist. His work can be see on Occult Crimes Taskforce, as well as many the trade paperback from Marvel Comics.

As for Turmoil to Peace, I am approaching the 3/4 mark on illustration. It looks like I will be using a lettering assist in order to make the deadline, but I'm already trying to fit over a calendar year's worth of work into an academic year. It features three high school seniors in 1992, and shows them as they deal with their last summer together before college.

I am working on a 15 page preview of Turmoil to Peace, the OGN I am working on as part of the Senior Fellowship program at Hamilton College. Working on the book has been very interesting, as my art style clearly develops throughout the pages as I become more comfortable with the characters. I think the book will be very telling of my own growth as an artist and writer, but overall I am pleased with how the art is coming out, even if the first pages show a little more discomfort with the characters and lines than the ones I'm doing now.

Points of Connection back moving

Points of Connection is back!
After some time of slow movement, artistic interest in Points of Connection has resumed. Almost all the stories have been assigned artists, and so this anthology, which deals with human interaction, is back on track. Also, people are asking to include their own stories on this topic in the book, which I am also okay with, and so the book continues to grow. I am considering illustrating a second story in the book as a fumetti, as my self portrait is a fumetti, but it's a style I really like. We will see.

My second book, "Turmoil to Peace," is moving along as well. I've been illustrating 5-6 pages a week, and trimmed the script down from 107 pages to 94. I will hopefully be done by the academic year, everything seems on track. A preview should be done before the end of the calendar year.

I've included some design sketches from Walter Rodriguez, who is illustrating "No One Saying Goodbye," a story in Points of Connection dealing with the end of High School in the early 1990s. I am really excited to see how the art on this book comes out as we have a variety of styles involved as always. Everyone is enthusiastic, and I think the book will turn out great.

Points of Connection continues to move slowly, with art updates coming in from artists, and others dropping out. I will soon be looking to fill the newly vacant art positions. Two stories may have to be dropped for a future anthology due to time constraints. However, what is coming in looks good- here's an art preview from Tyler Niccum:

Also I am currently writing and illustrating a full length graphic novel for the Senior Fellowship program at Hamilton College, who funded the work on Paradise Lost. The work is currently titled "Turmoil to Peace" and is a combination of a classic Russian Folktale with a modern relationship drama. Work on this is taking precedent these days, but I am trying to work both this and Points of Connection's art editing in tandem. We shall see how that goes. Art updates on the new book won't be coming for a while as I don't look to start scanning and lettering until after the turn of the year.

After Night's Events

Here is a page from one of the stories in the anthology I'm working on now- "Points of Connection." This story in particular is called "After Night's Events" and deals with diner culture and night culture and the procession of time. It was illustrated by Brian Butler, who handled the letters as well.

The proofs from Paradise Lost and Normal:adj are in and approved, I wait only on the full orders to ship.

Normal:adj has also now been sent in for printing with the new printer: Ka-Blam. Once printed, it will be available at www.indyplanet.com . There will be more on that as I have it, but the files have been picked up, so in theory things should be in my hands soon, maybe even before SDCCI, in which case I will have copies to hand out there.

As for Points of Connection, I am finishing up the last of the stories, and have found some local artists with a real interest in the project, so things go well. Hopefully it will go smoother than my last anthology. I still hunt for two artists for my two more mainstream proposals though, but I am not yet fatigued from the search, so it continues.

A Long Time (or rather long)

It's been a while since I have updated, but I am back today with an update similar to the last one. There was some problems with the Paradise Lost printing, and I have had to change publishers, but it has now been submitted again so things should be back on schedule. I have below posted the credits page for the book, which I think turned out great with illustration by Jeff Spokes and design by Matty Ryan.

Also here is a very rough preview of some work from an anthology I am working on called "Points of Connection," which will be dealing with the loose topic of human interaction and connections, and which grew out of my desire to work on shorter pieces while in Russia. The rough below is from one of the longer stories in the book, which deals with two brothers, and also the Brothers Karamazov. The art is by Kean Kennedy.

I haven't come back to update in a while, but I thought I finally would now that I have some time. Normal is finally nearing completion, with all but 3 pages lettered, and the final page in the last art stages otherwise. I've posted two pages of it below. Also, a death is coming along well, with only about 3 pages and a cover left on that. So, that should be wrapped soon. I still need to finish the script on Byproduct, which should happen now that I'll have a bit more time in the future. Also, the coloring on Paradise Lost is done, so all that's left on that is lettering. I have some pages from a death below as well. Sorry for the concise update, but that happens. When I say I have some time, I really mean I have a few minutes.

Pandemonium!

As of today, the lineart for Paradise Lost is officially complete, which leads right into coloring and lettering, so things are moving along. Normal too is speeding along now, and hopefully both will be out by the end of the year. I'll have some early pages from "a death" later in the week hopefully, but right now I thought I would show the great castle in hell from Paradise Lost.

Also, I'm looking at maybe putting out a collection of two short stories this summer, along with the other books planned for the summer (a death, and Byproduct). We will see. I'd be illustrating at least one of the shorts.

An Overall Update and the rest on Familiars

Okay. So.
As was expected, the latest attempt to have Familiars illustrated fell through, and so I will be looking into a new artist for that project in the future. It's written, it's not going anywhere. I may rewrite it when I redo the Nanjing book, since it was now written 4 years ago. I'll be posting the rest of the random Familiars pages below.

Paradise Lost is nearing the completion of the pencil and ink art stage. The cover is done, and there remains only 2 new pages and a revision to be drawn. The colors will follow, along with the letters. We will probably not make the end of the semester deadline I wanted for printing, but I'll likely put it in for printing and then have it dealt with while I'm gone for the spring.

Normal:adj is also nearing completion, with 19 of the 20 pages being lettered as we speak. I may be looking around for a new 20th artist, but hopefully that will be taken care of soon. The cover is nearing completion as well.

A Death, my piece about adolescent love and the lives we create for people when we have been out of contact with them, is in production. It will likely be finished over the spring and be put out this summer. I will try to post some prelim pages of it at some point.

Byproduct, a science fiction noir one shot I'm doing, is still in the planning and writing stages, but this too should be completed by the spring for sale at Comicon International if possible. I may have an art preview of that before I am away in the spring.

Also, I'm working on a 8 page short that I'll be publishing myself, and I'll be illustrating it too, which should prove interesting.

An update on Normal

Normal:adj, my sociological book about subjective artistic interpretation, is moving along. Everything is being lettered, and so here I have the first two pages. The monologue on each page is the same, and each artist was supposed to draw the script and interpret the genderless nouns and subjective description based on their own background. The final pages will run with the artists' bio information, but it hasn't been laid in yet on these.

Here are some early looks at pages 20 and 21 from Paradise Lost in the pencil/ink stage. We are getting closer to completion. The cover was completed last week, but I'll be keeping that under wraps for now. We still have some more pages to be pencilled/inked, but coloring is coming along as well, hopefully within a month from now the book will be off to the printers. I will post some WIPs of a colored page sometime this week. Also, one more page from Normal came in, and the other, the last, is due this week. I'll be talking more about that once the lettering comes in. I still need to do that overall status update sometime, perhaps later this week. Anyway, pages 20 and 21 below.

Familiars

One of the projects I've been working on for a while, which is currently on hold until I can find an artist to commit to it, is Familiars: Fake Blood and Fantasies. It's a dark comedy about vampire worshippers, focusing on Rob, the fashion chain sales rep and closet Familiar. I happen to really like the book, especially after revizing it, but right now it's on hold. I did have about half the book done at one point, but the artist ended up dropping out due to university work. This happens a lot, but it's still too bad in this case as the style on the book was great. Anyway, I'll be posting some random pages from the project coming up, not in any particular sequence. Here I'll have the cover, and two of the pages. Soon I'll post an update on all the projects I'm actually working on.

Behind the scenes on Paradise Lost

The artist being used on Paradise Lost is actually the second artist I have worked with on the book. The first had to exit the book due to some complications with his schedule, but I still have some complete pages and designs from him, and so I wanted to put them up. Paradise Lost itself is coming along, 19 pages are pencilled and inked, 1 colored, all waiting to be lettered, and the cover is in the coloring stage. I'm hoping for the end of the month on everything but the lettering.

Oh, and the first page would have had only text on black, but here is his layout for the page, with borders and such.

A logo and an old piece of art

Since my old studio has been reduced in size drastically, I decided to go a bit more independent and get into self publishing. So, I figured I would need a logo and such (along with a poor man's copyright on the way), and had Rachael Arnold design it. So, House Spirit Press, the Domovoi, is where I'll be putting out at least the next few books from.
Also, I have included a promo piece from a book I wrote up a few years ago (some of my first paid work, never published). The book was called Icon:Man of Might, about an actor playing a superhero, who in fact gains the powers of the hero he's playing in the non-celluloid world. It was a fun book to write, and I still regret not being able to write more adventures of the three snarky assistants that seem to follow him from acting gig to acting gig, but such is life, vot eto.

I finally decided to sell out and find a place to preview the projects I'm working on, and so here it is. This is where I'll post updates about projects and such, and any other comic related happenings. As of now I thought I would start by putting up the different stages of the cover to the Paradise Lost adaptation I'm working on through Hamilton College. I'll note some more things about projects as I post them.
